Kenn Taylor describes how ‘in 2008, the Baltic Triangle barely had street lights’ but it has become ‘Liverpool’s most cutting-edge creative quarter.’ Now dubbed as “Liverpool’s answer to New York’s Meat-Packing District”, the Baltic Triangle has become a hub of creativity and commerce within the city centre. Through a mixture of private investments and even sources such as Crowdfunding projects, the Baltic Triangle is one of the coolest places in Liverpool to live, work and hang out. Full of independent eateries, nightlife, art galleries and more, this particular space has evolved from abandoned 1980s warehouses into a playground for young creatives and property developers alike.
In 2017 The Sunday Times named the Baltic Triangle in its list of the ’20 coolest places to live in Britain’ and TravelSupermarket named it as the fourth hippest area in the UK. These bold claims alongside promotion on outlets such as social media means that it has attracted substantial groups such as students and young professionals who are all desperate to live in the heart of an exciting and eclectic space. It is an innovative area that attracts unique ventures from Constellations, a bar/music venue comprising of 8000 square foot regenerated from an old warehouse and recycling yard, to Ghetto Golf, an adult’s only crazy golf accompanied by cocktails and chaos. The space also continues to expand its impressive nightlight scene, with venues such as Camp and Furnace drawing custom from the very heart of the city centre into this more niche space with their impressive club nights, screenings of live sport and infamous events such as Bongo’s Bingo.
Carl Wong, CEO of LivingLens, states how ‘there are massive amounts of development in and around Baltic’ from halls of residence to retail development. Investors are flocking to this area with projects such as a £70 million luxury hotel with a rooftop restaurant and all the new residential buildings such as plans to develop a 145 apartment building near the lively Cains Brewery. David Williams, co-creator of the business Independent Liverpool describes Liverpool ‘as the perfect oasis for risk-takers and supporters’ as the city is currently ‘thriving’. Williams is certainly living by his claims as Independent Liverpool founded their own business within the Baltic Triangle alongside their other projects such as organising festivals, movie screenings and more. Mimicking business models seen in capital cities such as London and Copenhagen, Independent Liverpool opened the city’s first ever street food market, Baltic Market, in 2017. Situated in Cains Brewery, the market serves up an array of different cuisines from local street food traders as well as hosting events such as craft fairs and farmer’s markets. This is the epitome of what the Baltic Triangle stands for, producing an exciting business or project from an unused space, and it is has received rave reviews from locals and tourists alike, drawing even more trade into the area.
So what does this mean for the property recruitment industry in Liverpool? Well, in one word it means opportunity. This is a space that has gone from nothing to everything in less than 10 years and it is thriving and expanding every day. Property developers, estate and property management agents, entrepreneurs and artists are taking advantage of this unique space and particularly the younger generation is hooked on the area. As Neil Bennett, a reporter for The Liverpool Echo states ‘today, where major cities are in danger of being eclipsed by the presence of major multi-national retail chains and corporations, the Baltic Triangle breaks the mould.’ It is becoming a place where more and more people want to live, buy and invest in and ‘new apartment buildings are regularly popping up taking advantage of the Baltic Triangle’s increasingly prestigious reputation.’ It seems like the only way is up for this part of Liverpool.
