And On The Sixth Day God Created Man(chester)
Based just to the right of Piccadilly Gardens, The Northern Quarter was an invention of the 1990s as part of the regeneration of Manchester. The red brick buildings with their New York style fire escapes in this area once housed busy textile factories, but it has now been transformed into an eclectic and vibrant mix. The Northern Quarter is a trendy neighbourhood in Manchester filled with independent businesses, the best bars and restaurants, live music and comedy venues and more. If you are a tourist visiting Manchester you could easily spend an entire day just within the creative heart of the city and not run out of exciting things to do. It is has been highlighted as the place to be by a range of publications over the years from The Guardian to Culture Trip, Evening Standard and more and it certainly lives up to the hype.
Kate Feld, reporter for Time Out Manchester, describes the city as a place that gets into your bones and how you can move somewhere else but Manchester will always pull you back. It has all the perks of a big city whilst maintaining reasonable rent prices and many former Londoners have found themselves pulled to Manchester in order to maintain their exciting city lifestyles, whilst paying on average half of what they would be paying in the capital. The vast amount of investment poured into the city has created a blend of Manchester’s industrial past with contemporary architecture making it an exciting and interesting place to live.
Manchester is a sprawling metropolis with opportunities at every turn and the growth of businesses within the Northern Quarter is just one example of this. The businesses based within the Northern Quarter are flourishing with many successful ventures opening multiple venues around the area, offering different themes and experiences with entrepreneurs such as Beau Myers and Marie Carter owning Luck Lust Liquor and Burn, a North American road-trip inspired restaurant to Home Sweet Home, a quaint little all-day cafe and many more hotspots in the city. Businesses that started within the Northern Quarter have seen so much success that they have also been able to expand to other cities across the country such as restaurants like Crazy Pedro’s and Almost Famous who now also have ventures in Leeds and Liverpool.
The thriving developments within this part of the city has created an abundance of property jobs in Manchester, within architecture, residential and commercial property. The demand for new properties is showing no signs of slowing down as is the constant search for experienced property professionals to design, build and sell them.
In 2017 it was announced that Trilogy Property and Peterson Group had appointed Manchester-based architecture practise SimpsonHaugh to work on the £300 million plans to transform the Great Northern Warehouse, turning this Grade II-listed building into a residential, commercial and leisure quarter. And it doesn’t just stop there, Liverpool-based practise ShedKM are also working on a £250 million scheme restoring 19th century warehouses on Aytoun Street into loft apartments and commercial space as well as Capital & Centric and Henry Boot Developments working on plans to complete 478 build-to-rent apartments and 2,8000m² retail and leisure space by 2020. It is easy to see how Manchester’s architecture and property scene is truly thriving and this city is a place that unites strong work opportunities with a strong social scene making it the perfect place to live. It has many selling points but the Northern Quarter is a shining jewel in the crown of the city with its bohemian vibe making it one of the most unique places in the country. This is an exciting time for Manchester and it seems it will only get better so if you are looking to relocate to a stimulating city this could definitely be the place for you.
