In 2017 building work began on a £1 billion regeneration scheme for the land behind Royal Liverpool Hospital. Designed to provide a whole new district of the city that will focus on healthcare and high-tech industries, officials hoped that the area would bring in thousands of jobs and act as another asset to the city. This project is set to create jobs not only within these specific areas, but also create opportunities within local architectural companies and estate agents. Construction giant Morgan Sindall has been assigned the task of constructing the space behind the hospital which has come to be known as Paddington Village as well as a contract to design and build the new Northern base for the Royal College of Physicians, making it the first centre of excellent for The RCP outside of London.

The college will occupy half of the proposed 140,000 square foot building space, with other businesses occupying the remainder and it is set to be completed in 2019. The Paddington Village project is an integral part of the wider Knowledge Quarter scheme which is designed to regenerate huge parts of the city from Lime Street to Kensington. Joe Anderson, Mayor of Liverpool, states that ‘Paddington Village is creating a huge amount of interest from investors’ creating excellent career opportunities and an array of vacancies. As the project continually progresses it cannot help but continually boost property jobs in Liverpool and architecture jobs in Liverpool as the city prepares to take on this huge task. The mayor also remarked on how ‘delighted’ he was that Morgan Sindall have been granted the contract from the North West Construction Hub as it is ‘vital’ to him that projects like the Knowledge Quarter ‘creates and supports jobs from the construction phase, right through to the end use of facilities.’

This is a space that is designed to encompass all strands of life, where people can live, work and socialise. It is intended to promote creativity and innovation and to unite the region’s key partners in order to close the economic gap with the south of England and in particular London. To support the growth of new innovative businesses, Knowledge Quarter intends to promote programmes that invest in research and its 54,000 students as well as reposition Liverpool as a front runner in global innovation making the city more appealing than ever. This means that we can expect to see more students and experts in these specialised fields flocking to the area and a stronger job market within the city than ever before. Some of the main aims outlined within the project include improving connectivity and attracting investment, once again meaning that opportunities in property jobs in Liverpool and architecture jobs in Liverpool will continually skyrocket as this area and the city in general goes from strength to strength.

This new venture is so exciting for those working in property and architecture because it offers a challenge when designing and marketing these particular spaces. The companies and organisations within this area need tailored spaces, such as ‘state-of-the-art laboratories or connected workspaces’ and Barry Roberts, Morgan Sindall’s area director in the North West, has promised to produce facilities that will ‘match the ambition and innovativeness of their end users.’ The council’s strategy to stimulate the city’s economy by focusing on knowledge intensive jobs is going to drive Liverpool to a new level. This project will perpetuate opportunity after opportunity the more it is developed and the more successful it becomes and those working within recruitment in Liverpool are certainly going to have their hands full. This is an excellent opportunity for those in property and architecture, an opportunity that will stimulate and challenge them as well as breed exciting, future ventures within the city.
