Liverpool has a rich architectural identity made up of many iconic and historic structures. One such building is 62 Castle Street, a Grade II listed building constructed in 1868. Originally designed to serve as a bank, the structure has distinctive features such as carved balustrades and arches with a stone façade. It has also been said that the building has somewhat of a maritime feel in its design, which is unsurprising given its proximity to the city’s waterfront and the city’s identity as a main port location.

Since its initial construction, the building has served many purposes, and currently occupies 62 Castle Street Hotel. The structure was recently on the market, looking for investors to take over this historic space, but has now been acquired by Liverpool-based real estate and hospitality operator JSM Group, who is known for owning and managing numerous prominent venues and properties in the city centre.

The acquisition covers 56-62 Castle Street, meaning it also includes Derby Square and Castle Moat House, and was handled by commercial property and development consultants Moffatt Scott, who are also based in Liverpool.

Director of Moffatt Scott, Andrew Scott, has stated ‘we are delighted to have acted for JSM Group on the acquisition of this landmark building’ as ‘buildings of this quality and profile in Liverpool city centre rarely come to the market, and alongside our client’s adjacent building, if offers significant asset management potential.’

Such a high-profile acquisition handled exclusively by Liverpool-based businesses means great things for property jobs in Liverpool and architecture jobs in Liverpool too, as well as providing a welcome boost to the overall local economy. Whilst the sale price is undisclosed due to an off-market deal, it has been revealed that the property has been let on a long lease, with said lease expiring in 2056.

Owner of JSM Group, Jamie Motlagh, has stated ‘this investment was a perfect fit for us, and we are delighted to have secured it. It complements our acquisition of Castle Moat House next door, which we extensively refurbished earlier this year, and is a great addition to our growing portfolio in Liverpool.’

Motlagh also highlighted that ‘we look forward to working with the tenants going forward and are keen to acquire similar properties should the opportunity arise.’

Indeed, JSM Group already have a robust presence across Castle Street’s property portfolio, with the acquisition of the former NatWest bank further down Castle Street in 2022, and the closely situated former magistrates court on Dale Street, which was purchased in 2025.

Continued investment into the city from a local business signifies strong opportunity in Liverpool’s property market, whilst also paving the way for future growth. It will be interesting to see how JSM Group continue to expand their portfolio across the city going forward.
